Abortion Story

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said:
"Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even 1 yr. old and I’m pregnant again. I don’t want kids so close together."

So the doctor said: ’Ok, and what do you want me to do?’
She said: ’I want you to end my pregnancy, and I’m counting on your help with this.’
The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: "I think, I have a better solution for your problem. It’s less dangerous for you too.’

She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.
Then he continued: ’You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let’s kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we’re going to kill one of them, it doesn’t matter which one it is.

There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.
The lady was horrified and said: ’No doctor! How terrible! It’s a crime to kill a child!
’I agree’, the doctor replied. ’But you seemed to be ok with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.
The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point. He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that’s already been born and one that’s still in the womb. The crime is the same!

The Pinoy Ka Ba? came when there were a lot of Filipinos including herself who has forgotten our history and our heroes. This game aims to instill in the hearts of the Filipinos the love of our homeland.

The Return of the Traditional Street Games

Have you seen some children playing patintero, tumbang preso and piko in some streets and even inside your school? Do not be surprised anymore for they are the participants to the first ever Larolympics!
What is Larolympics?
Larolympics is a tournament which features traditional games such as piko, tumbang preso and patintero. It was launched last May in Marikina City. Different barangay and schools in the country also hold their simultaneous launching.
"Larolympics" came form the word "larong Pinoy" and "Olympics". This tournament was launched by the officials of Marikina City and Anak TV, an organization that promoted child-friendly programming.
Anak TV trustee Elviar Go said that for the pilot year, only three games were selected because they do not require uniforms, equipment or venues.
Who are the Participants?
The games featured the Chikiting class for boys and girls, aged seven to 10 and the Bagets class for kids aged 11 to 14.
Larolympics was played in the cities of Marikina, Makati, Tagaytay,
Olongapo, Bacolod, Baguio, Kalibo, Iloilo, General Santos, Tagum, Davao and Butuan. The tournament also went in the towns of San Mateo, Isabela and New Lucena, Iloilo.
Most players from each city and town compete in Larolympics games last July
Why Is Larolympics Launched?
Did you know that Filipino kids like you record an alarming high rate of television viewing? It has been reported that children spend more times watching TV and surfing the Internet than engaging in exercises and sports.
As a result, children do not just grow "vertically" but also "horizontally", which mean that many are becoming more and more obese. They are also getting stricken with diabetes, heart disease and other adult disease.
According to Marikina Mayor Marides Fernando, Larolympics is launched to encourage children to engage in physical activity and at the same time, to recognize the importance of playing outdoors with other kids.
The Benefits of Larolympics
Larolympics promotes their physical, mental and social development of Filipino children. It encourages them to go outdoors and engaged in physical activity.
Mayor Fernando adds that Larolympics gives children the chance to spend time outdoors, stretch their muscles, keep fit and enjoy their childhood through simple native games.
Much more, the said tournament revives the traditional games that our country had.
Whats New?
Is Larolympics all about playing piko, tumbang preso and patintero? The answer is no. In fact, there are some "twists" in this tournament as there are some interesting changes.
For the patintero, the lines used were inscribed with childrens rights, as though they are protecting them.
The tin can used in tumbang preso bear drawings of drugs, cigarettes and alcohol which the participants have to turn down or resist.
More to Come
Only three traditional games were included in the recent Larolympics. But, Anak TV trustee Go is confident that the tournament will continue and more towns and cities will participate next year.

Pantomina

Pantomina is a wedding dance that traces its local roots from the Bicol region, particularly in the towns of Estandarte and Sorsogon provinces. It is also popular in the northern part of Samar particularly in the towns of Allen and Capul, which both face the Bicol region. This dance, traditionally performed by the couple and their visitors, is still popular in the Bicol region even up to this time.
Traditionally, musicians accompanying Pantomina dancers pause from playing the pantomina music to allow the dancers to wipe their perspiration. The wiping of perspiration has become a little flirty, with the male dancer offering his own handkerchief for the woman to wipe herself. The delighted audience would tease the couple (especially if the two are young and unmarried) as doing a "love pantomime" and the musicians would immediately resume playing the music. After the love pantomine has waned, the focus of the pantomina returns to the dance itself.
Pantomina was among the first folk dances to have its dance steps notated. The pantomina was featured in Francisca Reyes Aquino’s first-ever folk dance book, Philippine Folk Dances and Games, published in February 1926. The dance, according to Aquino, was also called Salampati during the Spanish occupation.

UN hails Iraq election results

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, recently made a surprise visit to Iraq to congratulate voters there on the outcome of nationwide local elections. After talks with political leaders in Baghdad, Ban said the vote showed how far Iraq had come.
Ban however said there was still a long way to go before Iraqis could claim to have "genuine freedom and security." Allies of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki swept to victory in Baghdad and key provinces in last Saturday’s poll.
The United Nations played a key role in organizing the elections - seen as a test of stability before a general election, due later this year.
The BBC’s Jim Muir, in Baghdad, says that like everyone else, the UN is relieved that both the polling day itself and the announcement of the results passed off with virtually no violence at all.

Liberian crop pest mystery solved

A mystery pest which has devoured crops and contaminated water in Liberia and Guinea has finally been identified, BBC said in a report.
The report said the insects, thought to be armyworms, are in fact the caterpillars of the moth Achaea catocaloides.
The report said the information came from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization.
Cornering the culprit will allow the government to select the best pesticide to tackle the outbreak - the worst seen in Liberia since 1970. More than 20,000 people have so far had to evacuate their homes.
As well as devouring coffee, cocoa and plantain crops, the invaders have polluted drinking water sources with their stools.

The program has been downloaded more than 4,000 times from Apple’s iTunes store in less than two weeks..

Telescope sees smallest exoplanet

The smallest planet yet found outside the Solar System has been detected by a French space telescope, a BBC report said.
The report said the rocky world is less than twice the size of Earth. Only a handful of planets have so far been found with a mass comparable to Earth, Venus, Mars or Mercury.
The discovery was made by Corot, an orbiting observatory with a 27cm-diameter telescope to search for planets orbiting other stars. About 330 of these "exoplanets" have been discovered so far. But most of them have been gas giants similar to Jupiter or Neptune.
"For the first time, we have unambiguously detected a planet that is ’rocky’ in the same sense as our own Earth," Malcolm Fridlund, Corot project scientist from the European Space Agency (Esa), said in the BBC report.

Obama signs child health care law

US President Barack Obama recently signed a bill to expand government-funded health insurance to cover an additional four million children. He acted just hours after the House of Representatives backed the $32.8bn (£23bn) expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Programme, according to a BBC report.
US senators passed the same legislation last February. It is seen as a victory for Obama, which occurred a day after two politicians withdrew their nominations to government posts.
Tom Daschle, who was to become the new health secretary, and Nancy Killefer, Obama’s choice to oversee budget and spending reform, both withdrew when questions were raised about their tax affairs.
